And at the End – Andy Marlette & The News Journal

I have great news for all of you cretins, crooks and crooks of the Panhandle political class. Grab your champagne and pop your corks – the silly cartoonist is officially leaving the Pensacola News Journal!

Yes, cartoonist Andy Marlette announced earlier this month that he was leaving the newspaper where he had in office since 2007. When the split occurred, The Daily Cartoonist said it was unknown whether Andy had “taken a buyout, been fired, quit, fired or was going to colonize Mars”. Since then, neither The Pensacola (Florida) News Journal nor Andy has expanded on Andy’s farewell column, which we eventually read.

… It was funny. But the time and opportunity has finally come to go rogue and pursue other lifelong artistic interests. Possibly an impressionist floral painting. Perhaps a biblical triptych. And the most subversive art form the world has ever known: children’s books.

It seems odd to leave the paper when Florida politics is what it is: Florida Panhandle Congressman Matt Gaetz is facing disturbing allegations, while Florida Senator Rick Scott is in charge of Republican national campaign fund and that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is Ron DeSantis. Andy will continue to commentate nationwide instead of locally and I’m sure these Florida Men will occasionally make appearances in future Andy editorial cartoons.

I will not give up political cartooning. I will always insult the judgmental sensibilities of people who take themselves far too seriously through syndicated political cartoons. And I keep growing the Florida-flavored year-old comic, Shrimps and Grits.

And these national caricatures will always be seen by local fans across the miracle of syndication,
but Andy’s columns and charts for the newspaper will now be a thing of the past.

Editors Ted Rall and Scott Stantison their DMZ America podcast, use the loss of Gannett’s latest political cartoonist as a springboard for a very interesting half-hour discussion, from an insider’s perspective, about editorial cartoonists, the news industry, the Pulitzer, syndication, publisher reaction to reader reaction, and the fact that editorial cartooning isn’t easy.

Editorial cartoonists Ted Rall and Scott Stantis are in a bad mood following the Gannett newspaper chain’s decision to fire/fire/buy out their colleague Andy Marlette, marking a new stage in the media’s war on political cartooning.

Also, I’m learning to say “Gannett” (guh-NETT vs. GANN-et).

DMZ America Podcast 65 (discussion of the caricature begins at minute 58).
