The CW’s Arrowverse of interconnected superhero shows has become known for a number of elements, including seeing its characters intersect. Fans have been treated to a number of crossover events over the years, ranging from large-scale superhero blockbusters to small team-ups between characters. One show that had an interesting relationship with this was batman, especially once Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie) took on the titular role of the series. While the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic have largely prevented crossovers, the first issue of DC’s Earth-Prime spin-off comic saw Ryan cross paths with a surprising character from super girl. Spoiler for Earth Prime: Batwoman #1, by Natalie Abrams, Kelly Larson, Camrus Johnson, Clayton Henry, Michael Calero, Marcelo Maiolo, Matt Herms and Tom Napolitano below! Watch only if you want to know!
The issue’s first (and main) story takes place amidst the events of Season 3, as Ryan Wilder/Batwoman (Javicia Leslie) attempts to compete for the villain Batman’s remaining trophies, all against the backdrop of Mary’s turn. Hamilton (Nicole Kang) as Poison Mary and Marquis Jet (Nick Creegan) take over Ryan’s life as the new Joker. All the while, Ryan must deal with the latest trophy – the slime of Clayface, who broke loose in Gotham City and bonded with a young boy named Tanner, who is using his powers to get revenge on his bullies. Along the way, Ryan unwittingly gains an ally in all sides of his current conflict – Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath), who has arrived from National City to have a meeting with Ryan, hoping to use Wayne’s resources. Enterprises – specifically, the cold tech used by Mr. Freeze, which is stored in the Bat Cave – to benefit his foundation.
Along the way, Lena bonds with Ryan and Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson), and is even the first to tell Ryan about the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths. She also provides unique sage advice to Ryan, assuring him that she will be a great Batwoman and can reconcile with Mary.
This provides the greatest crossover that batman and super girl have had since pre-Crisis, as that live event set up Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) and Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) as the next big duo within the Arrowverse. While that didn’t materialize after Rose left the show and Leslie was cast, it’s still great to see Ryan interact with super girlof the world.
“In season two, hopefully we’ll just get back into production, and everything is normal, or at a normal level at some point. Because you know how crossovers are so hard to plan and blah blah blah, and I’m sure COVID isn’t going to do us any favors in that regard,” batman Showrunner Caroline Dries explained to ComicBook.com in 2020, “But for me, the most important relationship is Batwoman and Supergirl. So I think if we’re able to do a crossover, that would be what I would try to concentrate.”
