Editorial Cartoons April 17, 2022: Inflation, Ukraine vs. Goliath, Twitter Takeover

The consumer price index jumped 8.5% in March from 12 months earlier – the biggest year-over-year increase since December 1981, the US Labor Department reported. In the main image of the editorial cartoon gallery, editorial cartoonist Dana Summers of Tribune Content Agency depicts rising fuel, food and housing prices as Godzilla crushes American consumers.

Bill Bramhall of the New York Daily News draws the inflation monster devouring a man while the Democratic Party worries about gender. Elsewhere in the gallery, Phil Hands of the Wisconsin State Journal sees the culture wars from a different perspective, drawing a child as a pawn of Republicans seeking to ban books, critical race theory and sex education.

Russia’s war against Ukraine has continued unabated. Mike Luckovich of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and David Horsey of the Seattle Times both cast Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the biblical David taking on the Russian Goliath. The cartoonists also commented on Russian President Vladimir Putin wiping Ukrainian cities off the map, being told what he wanted to hear by his generals and washing his bloody hands.

Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and other companies, has announced plans to buy Twitter for $43 billion. Musk launched his tender offer as necessary to remove the social network’s restrictive speech that violates its terms of service. Twitter said it intended to fight the takeover by instituting a “poison pill” defense.

Other current events in the cartoons include another scandal in Albany, with the resignation of New York’s new lieutenant governor after his arrest on federal campaign finance charges; traffic jams at the Texas-Mexico border after Texas Governor Greg Abbott stepped up inspections; more restrictions on abortion in red states; the next tax due date; and Easter, in religious and secular imagery.

The cartoons were drawn by Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett, and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and AF Branco, Mike Luckovich and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
