Editorial cartoons from November 7, 2021: Republican ascendant, Breathless Democrats, climate conference

Tuesday’s election results gave Republicans a boost. In the race for governor of Virginia, Republican Glenn Youngkin defeated Democrat Terry McAuliffe. President Joe Biden had won the state in double digits. In New Jersey, Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli is less than a percentage point behind incumbent Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat. A recount is expected.

Some see this election as an indicator for the 2022 midterms. Democrats get the message; they have stepped up negotiations to pass the $ 1.75 trillion Biden program and related infrastructure bill. Bill Bramhall of the New York Daily News painted Biden as a shopkeeper with empty shelves where his accomplishments should be.

Editorial cartoonists left and right have drawn elephants and donkeys in various states of exultation and peril.

In Glasgow, Scotland, world leaders gathered for the 26th United Nations Climate Conference. The absence of Russia and China led some observers to declare it a failure from the outset. Phil Hands of the Wisconsin State Journal revisited the old anti-drug television commercial involving a scorching frying pan and an egg, replacing the slogan “Here’s your brain on drugs” with “Here is your Earth with no massive reduction in carbon emissions.

Cartoonists also commented on the controversy over teaching race in schools; the Texas abortion law; the dangers of inflation; and fall back into pre-Covid normality (as well as daylight saving time).

The cartoons were drawn by Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Scott Stantis, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and AF Branco, Mike Luckovich and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
