Final Season of ‘Beastars’ Begins Production on Netflix

Another anime series was cut from a major platformer, but this time it’s not Warner Bros. Discovery’s default. And at least this show will see some type of planned finale. The Twitter account of Netflix’s hit animated series Beastars recently announced that its third and final season is now in production and will air in 2024. While the cancellation was revealed in December 2021, fans can now rest assured that the series will still get its much-deserved last hurray.

Based on the hit manga by Paru ItagakiBeastars follows deep and compelling characters in a world full of anthropomorphic animals, much like Disney’s zootopia. However, that’s where the similarities end. This mature series deals with heavy topics such as depression, intimacy, sexuality, drug addiction, racism and human trafficking. Protagonist Legoshi, a teenage wolf, must deal with the death of his herbivorous best friend while developing feelings for a rabbit named Haru, whom he wants to simultaneously love and kill (okay, a wolf-rabbit friendship is another similarity). In addition to its adult themes and compelling story, the anime’s animation style has won critical and audience acclaim.

While most anime projects feature 2D animation, Beastars features awesome 3DCG styling, as well as stop-motion animation and even pop-up book-style animation. According to Jonah Scott, the series’ lead English voice actor, “Studio Orange has taken incredible care with every frame and shot, and that means a lot to us as viewers and actors. Legoshi’s facial expressions were actually inspired by the original Japanese actor’s performance, such as where his eyes would go and how his lips would pucker. When CGI is done well, and there are some that aren’t done well, you really get the nuances and that’s why people say it’s unlike any other anime they’ve ever seen previously.

The first season of the anime enjoys a critical rating of 94%, with an Audience Score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, while Season 2 holds an Audience Score of 76%. Beastars also received the award for Best Opening Sequence, in addition to eight other nominations, at the 5th Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Season 2 was recently nominated in three categories at the 6th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2022 but did not receive a win.

The experimental series is developed by the amazing Studio Orange, who are currently working on the upcoming project Stampede Triguna CGI reboot of the classic 90s action anime of the same name.

Watch the latest season of Beastars sometime in 2024 on Netflix.
