How does Free Comics Day work?

Don’t take the name too literally: you can’t just take what you want from the shelves. Participating publishers print special editions for the FCBD.

Some are reprints to introduce newcomers to classic comics, while others are previews of upcoming comics or brand new titles teasing big crossover events.

Comics are usually labeled to indicate who they are suitable for: a green label appears on comics for all ages, blue means they are suitable for teenagers, and a red “mature” banner means they are for readers 18 years and over.

Demand is always high, so getting to your local comic book store early is never a bad idea.

Additionally, FCBD releases are usually labeled “Silver Comics” or “Gold Comics”, the latter being applied to the most popular titles from top publishers like Marvel and DC.

A store may limit the number of Gold Comics you can hang or have another policy.

Where can I get free comic books for Comic Book Day?

Just about any comic book store will have FCBD releases, although every store may not have every comic. You might want to hit more than one to get what you want.
