May 8, 2022 editorial cartoons: Supreme Court Leak, Roe v. Wade cancelled?

The explosive leak of a draft of a Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade dominates the gallery of editorial cartoons this week.

Policy published the text, written by Judge Samuel Alito and signed by Judges Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. Chief Justice John Roberts condemned the unprecedented leak of a fully formed, footnoted draft notice, and launched an investigation to find the leaker.

The 1973 ruling legalized abortion in the United States. If the final decision reflects the draft, abortion would immediately be declared illegal in at least 13 stateswith more chances to follow, Axios reported.

The cartoonists address both the leak and the substance of the draft decision. Many artists have focused on the potential rollback of abortion rights, a decades-long project of political conservatives, as undermining the court’s impartiality and legitimacy. Others consider the leak to be detrimental to the tribunal’s ability to do its job. The majestic Supreme Court building is pictured in ruins or disrepair by Scott Stantis, Bill Bramhall, Joel Pett, Joey Weatherford and AF Branco.

The cartoonists also commented on the milestone of one million Covid-19 deaths in the United States; the political implications of inflation for President Joe Biden; Elon Musk’s Twitter offering; rumors Biden could write off student loan debt; the senators’ grilling of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over immigration; and the joy of Mother’s Day.

The cartoons were drawn by Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Scott Stantis, Walt Handelsman, Phil Hands, Joel Pett, and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and AF Branco, Mike Luckovich and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
