Newcastle United Blog | Trippier confirms Howe’s reunion was a big reason for his decision

Newcastle have kicked off their rebuild with the addition of Kieran Trippier, who was confirmed this morning. The right-back joins Atletico Madrid until 2024 and will wear jersey number 15.

Our new signing met the press this afternoon where he revealed his enthusiasm for being part of the Newcastle draft. The 31-year-old is up for the challenge of keeping Newcastle in the Premier League and continuing from there.

Eddie Howe was instrumental in bringing the England International to Tyneside. Here’s what Kieran told Sky Sports about the attraction of a reunion with Howe:

“It was very important because he’s an excellent manager. I have kept in touch with him since he left (Burnley). I think it was 10 or 11 years ago.

“It was another big reason I came here. I know what he demands in training. I know what he expects in games.

Trippier could make his FA Cup debut against Cambridge tomorrow. Newcastle are awaiting confirmation from the competent authorities on their eligibility. Either way, he’ll get his first glimpse of sold-out St. James Park tomorrow.

Newcastle continue to work to attract new signings. They would apparently be working on improved deals for Sven Botman and Diego Carlos. The latest on Botman is that Newcastle are awaiting a response from Lille after their second offer with the defender eager to move.

Another player who has been seen as an early potential target is Lucas Digne of Everton. Rafa Benitez has confirmed that the left-back asked to leave Goodison Park in this window.

Here are some of Benitez’s statements at his press conference this morning, as published in the Liverpool Echo:

“I had a few conversations with him, he told me what he thought about it.

“So what do you expect from the manager when he thinks about leaving?”

“I repeat, fans and former players, what would Peter Reid say if a player went to the manager that he didn’t want to be here?

Newcastle are in good form at left-back so Digne may not be a priority. Paul Dummett is expected to be back soon while Jamal Lewis could be available towards the end of the month. Some also claim that the Frenchman is unwilling to move to Newcastle.

Benitez was then asked about the offers for the 28-year-old and he responded as follows:

“I’ll tell you that I would like to sign Haaland and Mbappe.

“I can do investigations, but I have to get involved. We need engagement, we don’t need surveys.

“I am not in charge of the negotiations.

“When someone asks, they have to commit to saying ok I’ll buy, or I’ll make a bond or something.”

“People can talk and talk. I’m really happy with Dominic, but if you bring me Mbappe, I’ll be happy too.

“Can I do it? I can apply and you will then ‘oh they’re interested’. That’s it.”

It doesn’t appear that Newcastle, or any other clubs, followed an initial interest in Digne. Although it looks like Digne played his last game under Benitez.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano continues to report that Digne will not end up at Tyneside. He also clarified that Lille still hope to keep Botman.
