Opinion on 1B before the election – The Durango Herald

Dear readers, when you open The Herald of Durango Next Saturday, you’ll notice that our Weekend Opinion cover page has undergone a bit of an election season rebuild. Weekend Opinion will be the cover of Section 1B, trading places with Southwest Life on the last page of the section, until the end of midterm.

We’re rearranging to highlight important races. In fact, we asked candidates to speak directly to South West voters by writing their own guest columns on why they should be re-elected or replace incumbents. (For consistency, the incumbent columns will be on the left side of the page.)

To kick off our coverage, we begin with a defining race that carries a lot of weight – governor of Colorado. Governor Jared Polis and challenger Heidi Ganahl will explain, in their own words, why they are worthy of the job. Every Saturday, candidates from other notable races — from county commissioner hopefuls to those who could represent us in the United States Senate and House — will show up to win your vote.

We regret that we cannot give this opportunity to every candidate in every race.

As a special treat, our fantastic and versatile in-house editorial cartoonist Wes Rowell will use his creative talents to illustrate the portraits of these candidates. His insightful and irreverent cartoons will return after the election.

It is a veritable election factory in the Herald these days with planning and executing our editorial coverage so voters can make thoughtful and informed decisions.

You readers are also part of this great election plan, so please keep sending your letters to the editor. We appreciate and appreciate them.

For now, we will return to our construction area and midterm election business in southwestern Colorado. We look forward to conversations with you.
