A new children’s arts center, Le Meraviglie (The Wonders in English), will open next week at 108 Montague Street, on the second floor. The center will offer a summer program from June 28 to July for ages 5 to 11. In the fall, a morning program for 2 to 4 year olds and their adults will be offered, including painting, clay exploration, mixed media and Italian story time. In the afternoons, lessons will be offered for children aged 5 to 11, covering comics, arts and drama, printmaking, multimedia sculpture and more.
Founder Piera Bonerba, who lives in Brooklyn Heights with her family, shared:
The Meraviglie is my dream. It draws on my experience as an artist and art teacher over the past eight years at the Scuola d’Italia on the Upper East Side, where I taught and developed the curriculum for kindergarten students. in the fifth year.
My approach there – and here at the Meraviglie – was inspired by what Reggio Emilia’s great educator, Loris Malaguzzi, called the hundred languages, the endless ways children can “express, explore and connect their thoughts, feelings and their imaginations. At Meraviglie we will do this by expressing – and exploring and connecting – through a wide variety of media drawing, painting, sculpting, sticking, sketching, making prints, working with textiles, and each week learning and inspired by , a different artist.
